Taco Tuesday at Uncle’s is what happens when Tuesday refuses to act like a Tuesday.

Every Tuesday from 4–8pm we’re slinging $3 tacos like it’s a public service. Happy Hour runs 4–6pm, because hydration is important… especially when tacos are involved.

Don’t forget live music. We crank it up with live music from local legends Out on Work Release. Nothing says “midweek motivation” like great tunes, cold drinks, and a stack of tacos that cost less than your gas station snack run.

Who says you have to wait for Friday? At Uncle’s, Tuesday shows up loud, hungry, and ready to party.

SJMA in conjunction with the US Forest Service, Pagosa and Bayfield Ranger Districts, is hosting educational geology hikes, free for the public, from May through October. These interpretive hikes, led and presented by geologists Dave Bouquet and Scott McAllister, will be in an area of the San Juan National Forest rich with evidence of earth’s geologic history from some of the area’s oldest metamorphic rocks, to Cretaceous seaways, to Tertiary volcanoes, to modern glacial deposits.

9/23 – “Marine Fossils at 8000 ft?” – Coyote Hill Loop Trail (re-scheduled from 9/17)

Walk through Ponderous Pine meadows to a beautiful overlook of Pagosa Peak.  During this hike, we’ll go off trail and climb to some ridge-forming limestone outcrops in the Mancos formation that contain marine fossils and numerous calcite crystals.  Learn why this area was covered by an inland sea for 30 million years during the Cretaceous period.

Trail Description: This is an ~5 loop hike with approximately 450 ft of gentle elevation gain.   With stops to discuss the geology of the area, you can expect a time commitment of 4 hours.  Pack a lunch or snack as we will be taking a break from the overview stop.

When: September 17, 2026 from 9am – 1pm

Where: Group will meet at the Coyote Hill Trailhead, ~6 miles north of Pagosa Springs on County Road 600 (Piedra Road).  Note on Google maps and other sites, this is called the Coyote Hill Trailhead (on the right) and not to be confused with the Turkey Springs trailhead just before it on the left.  Note that neither of these trailhead parking lots have a restroom.

What to Bring:

• Layers of cool and warm clothing
• Water (1/2 to 1 liter per hour)
• Sturdy, supportive footwear
• Lunch/snacks
• Rain jacket or poncho
• Hiking Daypack
• Sunscreen and sunglasses
• Camera

Names, dates, and drawings etched into the soft, white bark of Aspen trees stand silent witness to travelers from ages past. Carved by lonely sheepherders, cowboys, and sometimes other anonymous wayfarers, these amateur signposts are more than just antique graffiti, with many of them bound in the history and traditions of a bygone era. Local Arborglyph enthusiast/presenter Peggy Bergon leads hikers into the Buckles Lake area south of Pagosa Springs in search of these fascinating artworks on living wooden canvas.

The hike is approximately 3 miles long, with an easy-moderate difficulty level and minor elevation gains. The hike will include some off-trail portions.

When: Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 9am – 1pm

Where: Buckles Lake Trailhead; Take US-84E south of Pagosa. Turn left onto to Forest Road 663. Follow for about 7 miles

What to Bring:

• Hiking boots
• Appropriate apparel for mountain weather
• Your love of local history

Background on Arborglyphs:

Before the days of large cattle ranches dominating the western landscape, pioneering Hispanic families were raising thousands of sheep throughout the region. Woolies, as they were called, were introduced by the Conquistadors in the 1500’s and mutton would quickly become the cornerstone of the early western economy.

By the late 1800’s, local families like the Archuleta’s and the Martinez’s were prominent sheep ranchers with flocks ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 animals. Caring for the animals was entrusted to a sheepherder, with most flocks consisting of approximately 1,500 animals. Each spring, sheepherders embarked on an epic journey to guide the sheep from winter pastures in New Mexico to the lush alpine meadows of  Colorado.

With time on his hands, the smooth white bark of the aspen tree provided the perfect slate for the herder to give form to his thoughts. The carvings they left are called arborglyphs, a term that means “tree-writing.” The arborglyphs are a tangible yet rapidly disappearing gallery of unique folk art. Many carvings are over 100 years old and are being lost due to the disappearance of the aging aspen forests. Soon, visitors enjoying the surrounding forests will no longer see these reminders of the past. We strive to capture and honor this huge contribution to the cultural enrichment of the area, while highlighting the importance of these men to the early economy of the west.

Tai Chi on Thursdays at Yamaguchi Park! Classes are free for older adults (age 55 and better) and will last approximately 1 hour. No special clothing or equipment is required.

Tai Chi and mindfulness based meditation are not martial arts, but rather tools for self-healing. Softness, flow and effortlessness are the guiding principles in these practices. For Tai Chi, it will include 19 easy to learn movements and one pose designed to stimulate, circulate and balance the vital energy, or universal life force, referred to as ‘Qi’, which is inherent in all of us. Tai Chi is often thought of as a moving meditation because of the calming effect on the mind and emotions, and the release of tension throughout the body.

Friday, September 25th from 9 to noon, unplug, connect and discover the hidden geometry and patterns found throughout nature with the CSU’s Archuleta County Extension. During this guided hike participants will observe how nature unfolds in beautiful and artistic patterns all around us and have the opportunity to practice nature journaling along the way. $10 fee for materials. Takes place on Reservoir Hill starting at the trailhead behind Healing Waters spa.

For this week, students have the option of signing up for the complete four-week series at the discounted rate of $180 for all four classes — $45 per class — plus a one-time $40 materials kit fee. The materials kit covers all four classes and also gives students supplies to continue practicing and creating at home.
