Description

Warm up at Winterfest with our annual Battle of the Soups! Local chefs, restaurants, and home cooks serve up their best recipes in a friendly (and delicious) competition. Sample a variety of soups, cast your vote for the Crowd Favorite, and enjoy cozy winter vibes with friends and neighbors. Perfect for all ages and a great way to taste the flavors of Pagosa!

Contest is open to Restaurants and Home Cooks.  There will be a Best Restaurant Soup, Best Homemade Soup and People’s Choice.

Saturday, January 17 as part of Pagosa Springs Winterfest!

A unique, super-fun freestyle ski event in which participants can either classic or skate ski while target shooting with Red Ryder BB guns provided by the Pagosa Nordic Club. 10 seconds added for each shot missed during the race but no gun or shooting experience is needed. Parents can help the young ones cock and shoot. Kids really love this race!

Prizes for the top finishers and best costumes along with participant drawing giveaways.

Great fun for all ages!

TIME/LOCATION

Race Times:

9:00 AM: Competitive 16K Race begins

10:00 AM: Citizens 4K Race begins

11:00 AM: Kid K Race begins (Or when all adult races are done.)

Target Shooting:

Racers will have an opportunity to test shoot at targets for one half hour before their race. Target Shooting practice begins at 8:30 AM and will be available throughout the racing.

During the race, racers have 5 shots at targets, 3 times (between each course lap) with provided Red Ryder BB Guns. 10 seconds added to your finish time for each missed shot. So, take your time!

The race fee is $5 for Pagosa Nordic Club members/kids and $15 for non-members.
(If you are a Pagosa Nordic Club member, please use the race promo code to receive the PNC Member price for the race. The race code will be emailed via the Grooming Report.)

Please use RaceEntry to register, sign the waiver and pay. We will see you at the race!
(While walk-up registration is permitted, it really helps race organizers if racers register ahead of time using RaceEntry.)

Downtown Pagosa Springs on Reservoir Hill Sled Run  

Registration begins at 1:00pm * Sledding begins at 2:30pm Free registration! Lots of prizes!

Hot drinks and food on site. Donations welcome.

RULES:  Participants attempt to sled down a course on Reservoir Hill on handmade sleds. Sleds must be constructed from cardboard, plastic sleds, inflatables (tubes and such), duct tape and other decorations.  No sharp edges, nails, screws, or metal parts.  Sleds will be inspected before the race and if determined to be unsafe, or not following the above stated rules, the sled may be disqualified.  Helmets are recommended.

Celebrate Winterfest with a delicious breakfast and horse-drawn ride.

The horses and driver will start your tour with panoramic mountain and meadow scenery on this special hot air balloon ascension morning.  Then enjoy a breakfast spread of eggs and bacon, pastries, breakfast burritos, fresh fruits and coffee, accompanied with live music and view of balloons from the cozy lodge.  After breakfast, the ride continues through an expansive ponderosa pine forest and returns to the starting point.  8:00-9:30am.

These great introductory clinics for adults are held throughout the season. Skate ski and classic cross country ski basics will be shared by some of Pagosa Springs’ best skiers. All free of charge. Donations and Pagosa Nordic Club membership are strongly encouraged to help offset expenses with conducting the clinics and trail grooming. For adult never-evers, beginners and intermediates. Learn how to make these outdoor winter activities even more enjoyable. Bring your ski gear: skate skis or classic kick and glide.

Each session blends gentle stretching, guided dance sequences, and playful free movement set to clean, feel‑good pop music that moms actually enjoy. The vibe is supportive and inspirational. We focus on joy over perfection, attuning to postpartum bodies, and strengthening the mother‑child bond through rhythm, breath, and presence.

On Jan. 19, the Archuleta County Democrats will observe Martin Luther King Day with a special matinee presentation of the film Selma, a 2015 Best Picture nominee. 

The film recounts events of 1965, when a city in Alabama became a key battleground in the Civil Rights Movement. The struggle culminated with the historic march from Selma to Montgomery. 

Synopsis

Selma is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Each $25 ticket includes one entry for door prizes, which include gift certificates to local businesses and a copy of KING, the 2024 Pulitzer-Prize winning biography of Dr. King, signed by the author. Additional door prize tickets will be available for purchase. 

Doors open at 1 p.m. The program begins at 2.

Proceeds benefit the Archuleta County Democratic Party.
